A basket without an order is not automatically a purchase deserving another reminder. Information may be missing, an action may have failed or the task may have finished elsewhere. Recovery earns its value by identifying work still useful and making continuation less demanding. Insistence without resolving the barrier adds contact and subsequent service to acquisition cost.
The reason changes the help enabling continuation
The Baymard series published through Statista for the United States in 2025 places high extra costs at 39% of declared checkout reasons after excluding mere browsing. Slow delivery, return policy and website failures appear as different reasons. The set does not establish recoverable sales or an identified individual’s motivation.
Four interruption reasons need different responses

Baymard Institute / Statista. The statistic lists 1,026 adults; the exact filtered base N is not published. Multiple responses must not be added. These are not a Spanish company’s customers or recoverable orders. The current primary source covers another edition; historical figures come from the Statista 2025 table.

| Category | Reports the reason |
|---|---|
| High extra costs | 39.0% |
| Delivery too slow | 21.0% |
| Unsatisfactory return policy | 15.0% |
| Website errors or crash | 15.0% |
A delivery problem needs a condition the company can meet. An entry error needs a correction route. An unsuitable price can remain unsuitable after an email subject changes. The commercial question is which work communication removes. When the cause is a process defect, correcting it also avoids later interruptions and can reduce the need for rescue.
Pending work needs a state that can be established
A visit does not itself establish an initiated purchase. Draft, incomplete submission, received enquiry and pending review need different messages. Unknown outcomes also exist: failure to observe confirmation does not establish abandonment. Before requesting another attempt, the service needs to reconcile the same operation with the record capable of confirming its consequence.
Completion, cancellation and a decision not to continue close the corresponding recovery. They are different commercial outcomes, yet none justifies describing work as unfinished. A common operation reference prevents several sessions or device changes creating several fictional opportunities to recover one person.
An available address does not determine which message can be sent
Spain’s Article 21 of Law 34/2002 restricts electronic advertising and promotion that has neither been requested nor expressly authorised. Its exception requires a prior contractual relationship, lawfully obtained contact information and similar products or services from the provider; promotional objection must be simple and free. Entering an email in an unfinished purchase does not itself establish those conditions. Message content and purpose need deciding before the sequence executes.
Resuming an operation and contact preferences are different states. Returning to the website should not automatically create new promotional permission. Stopping messages also needs operating accountability: who receives the change and which sends lose their purpose. Total contact pressure matters when several sequences use the same channel.
Communication cost includes knowing which result belongs to it
The Litmus series published through Statista for late December 2024 to mid-January 2025 asked marketing professionals in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States about barriers to email goals. Measuring or demonstrating ROI appears at 22%, low engagement at 20% and inadequate staffing at 19%. These are professional assessments rather than shoppers’ reasons or recovery-campaign outcomes.

Five markets, rather than the US alone or a representative world population. Statista states N692; the Litmus primary page describes “nearly 500”, an unresolved discrepancy without the full report. Method and country bases are not published in the statistic; these options are not added or normalised. This does not measure recovered sales or establish a reminder’s effect.

That second question helps separate a site return from an intervention’s outcome. Opening a link is an intermediate stage; completing a purchase is another. If somebody would have returned without the message, crediting the whole order to contact exaggerates its contribution. The account also needs responses, corrections, opt-outs and complaints alongside delivery expenditure.
The link needs to restore work that remains recoverable
The W3C form-notification guidance recommends clear outcome and error messages with resolution instructions. Applied to recovery, it preserves a specific promise: what remains pending and what permits progress. It does not establish that every reminder generates sales.
Return needs to preserve valid information under suitable access. Changed price or availability should be reviewed before another commitment. When the operation has finished, the destination recognises that rather than requests the same purchase again. When progress is no longer retained, communication should stop promising continuity the customer will not find.
A real deadline can be explained; fabricated urgency generates activity at the expense of a less informed decision. Each message needs a function or genuine time condition. Frequency depends on the task and permitted contact, without a universal count making every observed interruption require a sequence.
Useful recovery can end in less contact
Reporting follows eligible pending operations that received communication and reached valid completion within a defined window. Several messages do not create several recovered customers. Returns and completions remain separate alongside cancellations, corrections and rejection. Period comparison needs offer, demand and availability conditions rather than automatically assigning every movement to wording.
The next investment follows the remaining barrier to continuation. A task no longer needing rescue can represent a larger improvement than another email round with more clicks. The programme deserves expansion when it retains actual state, restores usable work and can stop. Recovery helps those still wishing to continue rather than fills an unknown motive with insistence.
