Free access removes the user’s invoice rather than the cost of delivering the task. More accounts and activity require funding for execution, storage, maintenance and support. The commercial decision identifies free usefulness, the consumption sustaining it and another need justifying payment without artificially blocking the promise.
Free download does not describe usage economics
The October 2026 42matters series recorded by Statista classifies 97.09% of Google Play apps as free to download and 2.91% as paid downloads. The original confirms those percentages and explains that many free apps require subscriptions or offer in-app purchases. The catalog establishes neither people using each mode nor product profitability.

Design starts with a usable task requiring no payment and limits understood before dependence. Volume, collaboration and assistance can distinguish genuine needs. An inconvenience removed only through payment needs scrutiny: restoring promised capability through a charge is not clean evidence of additional demand.
Trial, payment and continuation require different denominators
Adapty analyzes anonymous App Store subscription data from 2024–2025. Statista records trial-to-paid rates of 29.31% in education, 38.56% in health and fitness and 18.35% in photo and video. The denominator is trial starters rather than all installs. Education’s install-to-trial figure is 6.83%, another condition with another base.

Anonymized batch data with added randomization. Mean or median unspecified. Trial-to-paid is not compared with install-to-paid as a causal effect, and aggregate rates are not multiplied to invent another conversion. Temporary trial is not permanent freemium.

The chart sets neither a sustainable free-to-paying ratio nor an income effect of adding trials. It supports declaring every indicator’s population and observing the complete cohort. Conversion among activated users can rise while fewer accounts activate. Removing nonpayers also removes some costs the offer generated.
The account retains human work and capacity
OpenStax distinguishes fixed, variable and mixed costs within a relevant range . Exceeding capacity can require another step in supposedly fixed spending. Cost per task, active account and period total therefore answer different questions without treating unbilled team support as free.
Free-task resources, help and corrections remain identified, with documented estimates when detail is unavailable. Inactive and intensive-use accounts have different consumption. Shared spending retains consistent allocation: evaluating expansion’s additional cost differs from funding complete continuity.
The OpenStax contribution-margin definition deducts variable costs from revenue, leaving funds for fixed costs before profit. This offer shows free-activity service cost separately from paid contribution rather than hiding its funding in an average.
The cohort account retains net revenue and attributable variable costs within the same window under documented economic criteria. Discounts, refunds and still-free accounts remain included. Collections, payments and reserves additionally appear on a cash calendar: a positive projection cannot fund an obligation due before money arrives.
Payment follows a broader task
More frequency, capacity, coordination or human intervention can require another mode. The signal supplies a hypothesis; willingness to pay is observed through valid purchases and refusals under understandable conditions. Free access retains value, and exceptions have purpose and duration rather than becoming a hidden actual price.
Included assistance names scope, route and outcome with its cost. Legitimate intense use, accidental repetition and breaches of conditions need different decisions. Execution savings are no improvement when they break the task or return as manual review and support.
Expansion retains cohorts and an affordable window
Free activation, first payment and repeated tasks retain states and windows. Comparisons use equally mature groups, counts and equivalent conditions. Returning to find unfinished information does not establish the same usefulness as completing a new task.
Expansion first agrees the funding and capacity supporting observation and evidence permitting continuation. Revenue concentration and temporary financing retain visible risk without publishing individual customers. Changed offers include prior commitments and transition cost. Free access can fund acquisition or service, but deserves growth when the promised outcome and resource account jointly explain who pays for continuity.
