# Improve activation before expanding acquisition

A practical method for defining the first useful outcome, finding where the journey breaks down and choosing the obstacle to address before acquiring more customers.

Expanded acquisition adds cost before establishing whether current arrivals achieve the promised outcome. When enough demand exists to observe the task, activation research helps decide whether the missing condition concerns suitable audiences, information, execution or delivery capacity. Buying more entries does not itself resolve any of them.

The initial outcome follows the customer’s task: an applicable answer, a valid operation or a usable service. Registration and visits are access. Later continuity is another question requiring its own window. Separating them prevents funding activity that has not yet produced usefulness.

## Post-install usage also changes with the task

Adjust reports 2025 day-1 retention of 27% for gaming, 12.6% for ecommerce and 12% for finance; Statista records the figures. Day-30 rates are 5%, 3% and 2%. The category comparison places reference selection in context: these usage rates identify neither an initial useful outcome nor a paying buyer.

Adjust / Statista. Original p. 21, 29 and 37 confirms values; p. 13 describes anonymized aggregate data, top 5,000 mixed with the total dataset, source pools of 45 countries and approximately 250 ISO territories. Cohort-specific N is unpublished. Provider usage rates, not commercial activation, purchase or product effects. Neither universal targets for other offers nor rates divided into other providers’ costs to calculate activation cost.

__Adjust 2025: reported post-install retention by category (%)__
| Category | Gaming | E-commerce | Finance |
| -------- | ------ | ---------- | ------- |
| Day 1 | 27.0% | 12.6% | 12.0% |
| Day 7 | 13.0% | 6.0% | 6.0% |
| Day 30 | 5.0% | 3.0% | 2.0% |

An episodic task can finish without requiring next-day return. Another depends on repetition. The business defines activation’s qualifying condition while keeping retention, frequency and purchase separate. An external percentage provides context rather than replacing observation of the company’s own journey.

## The journey begins with the promise before registration

The GOV.UK user-needs guide recommends investigating what people are trying to do and their existing approach. Its setting is public services. Commercial application informs a concrete outcome question rather than establishing a universal activation event or guaranteeing sales.

The map connects promise, understanding of conditions, essential information, execution and recognition of completion. It includes waiting, another person’s review and help beyond the interface. Each stage preserves the customer’s action, the service response and the condition permitting progress.

## A departure can concern price, timing or trust

Baymard’s United States 2025 checkout series published through Statista records excessive extra costs in 39% of answers, slow delivery in 21% and distrust with card details in 19%. These are reported reasons rather than a diagnosis of this product. The comparison explains why simplifying a screen does not necessarily change the condition prompting departure.

Baymard Institute / Statista. Study N 1,026, precise filtered-question base and field dates unpublished. Multiple answers are neither added nor interpreted as sales recovery. Historical 2025 table verified in Statista; the current primary page concerns later research. Its 2026 browsing figure is not incorporated. Not app activation data or combined with Adjust cohorts.

__United States 2025: commercial conditions cited in checkout abandonment (%)__
| Category | Mentions the reason |
| -------------------------- | ------------------- |
| Extra costs too high | 39.0% |
| Delivery too slow | 21.0% |
| Distrust with card details | 19.0% |
| Total unavailable upfront | 14.0% |

A departure can follow unsuitable fit, discovery of a necessary requirement or an initial promise creating a different expectation. It does not authorize removing information to improve a rate. Intervention begins with a documented reason; an unconfirmed hypothesis retains that status.

## The cohort preserves start, eligibility and maturity

The proposed activation rate divides eligible customers reaching the outcome within a window by eligible customers starting in that cohort. The window follows the task and stays stable. Counts and pending cases remain visible; an empty denominator does not produce a zero rate.

The GOV.UK completion guide relates completed and started transactions and addresses saving and returning. Commercial application preserves matching starts and outcomes without automatically transferring public-service eligibility rules.

Each stage uses those arriving and able to proceed as its denominator rather than all visits. Recent cohorts have had less time to finish. Cases lacking reliable evidence remain unknown: counting them as abandoned exaggerates failure, while counting them as activated conceals it. Coverage accompanies interpretation.

## Priority considers unfinished work and later consequences

The largest percentage drop need not affect the most people or offer the most useful correction. Decisions combine affected volume, severity and ability to respond. Events locate interruption; support, task observation and voluntary feedback help explain it without reconstructing private profiles.

A correction specifies expected change and harm signals: errors, help, time to a valid result or later cancellations. Active time differs from waiting. Fewer initial enquiries are no improvement if complexity returns later; legitimate assistance retains its visible outcome and cost.

A higher rate after a correction describes a change rather than proving its cause. Audience, offer and capacity may have changed. Comparisons wait for equally mature cohorts and do not assign existing journey participants to a new acquisition channel.

## Expansion depends on repeatable delivery

Growth requires knowing whether the initial outcome remains useful with more demand, reviews and assistance. An experience achieved through exceptional attention does not establish repeatable capacity. The team agrees its own economic and delivery conditions rather than adopting an unsupported external threshold.

Acquisition can expand when the relevant obstacle has an explanation, the outcome is observed within known scope and the service can sustain it. Another question then returns: where to find compatible demand and at what cost. Activation informs that decision by preserving the resolved task rather than replacing it with accumulated registrations.
