A commercial page is rarely finished on the day it is translated. A price, delivery condition or product explanation changes. WPML introduces an economic distinction in that work: with PTC and Translate Everything Automatically, revisions stop adding translation charges while the content stays within the length already paid for.

The September 16 launch of WPML 5.0 presents that change alongside background translation. OnTheGoSystems, the company behind WPML, is selling continuity for a website that changes. Its growth opportunity is to demonstrate what work the product helps keep current, beyond the first batch of words sent into another language.

## The boundary is the page, the language and the paid-for length

The pricing documentation specifies the condition: WPML keeps the highest word count paid for each page and target language. Rewriting content within that limit adds no billable words. If the page grows, the increase above the previous maximum is charged. The rule requires PTC together with Translate Everything Automatically.

Manual sends and other modes follow a different model, charging per updated word. The automatic-mode documentation adds that a manual overwrite can bill the whole page. Sites already using an older engine may continue working, but do not receive the PTC editing arrangement merely because they do so. Engine and mode selection belong in the economic comparison.

An example isolates the rule without inventing an invoice. A 1,000-word page translated into two languages represents 2,000 source words counted across the targets. A revision that preserves that length adds no billable volume in the stated mode. If the page then grows to 1,200 words, the additional volume above the maximum is 400 words across both languages. The amount depends on included balances, monthly consumption and the applicable rate; the illustration calculates neither taxes nor human review costs.

That detail changes the behaviour worth selling. An agency can revise a product page, clarify a buyer objection or correct a message without sending the same entire text back into the translation budget. People still decide on and review the change. The specific advantage concerns the engine bill under those conditions, rather than removing every cost of maintaining the website.

## A large installed base needs more than a first translation

The scale of WordPress helps explain where this sale takes place. The W3Techs series published by Statista puts its share among websites with a known CMS at 65.2% at the start of 2022 and 60.2% at the start of 2026\. The figure describes a worldwide technology base. It measures neither WPML demand nor OnTheGoSystems revenue.

The data behind the story

### WordPress retains the largest CMS base, with a smaller share than in 2022

Worldwide. The denominator is websites with an identified CMS, not all websites, sales, plugin buyers or WPML revenue. January values from the Statista table published May 6, 2026, archived October 13\. Original W3Techs series checked again on October 16, 2026.

| 2025 | 62.0% |
| 2026 | 60.2% |

For an extension provider, that combination matters: a dominant platform provides a substantial market, but its share does not guarantee that another customer buys a translation. The commercial work lies in identifying a need inside existing websites. A store revising its catalogue every week has different economics from an institutional page left unchanged for months.

Useful segmentation begins with that frequency and the number of languages requiring attention. Initial expenditure matters more for a website that rarely changes. Keeping revisions consistent matters for an active catalogue. That difference allows the offer to be explained through use cases, without assigning renewal rates or undisclosed savings to the company.

## Publishing in another language does not establish a sale

Translation opens a purchasing surface; the customer still needs to understand the offer, accept its conditions and finish the order. Measurement by language needs to preserve the whole journey. Translating a description while delivery, returns or payment remain unclear leaves work unfinished within the same commercial process.

Content distribution helps separate two decisions. The Statista table based on W3Techs and Digital 2026 puts English at 49.2% of the websites observed in October 2025, compared with 6% for Spanish and 5.9% for German. These are shares of website content supply, not percentages of buyers or an estimate of Spanish demand.

Worldwide observation from October 2025, published October 22, 2025\. The report’s 2026 title does not change the observation period. It counts websites with an identifiable language, not people, page views, Spanish demand or sales. Selected categories are not renormalized and imply nothing about omitted languages. W3Techs studies relevant websites and excludes duplicates and redirects; this is not a probability survey of consumers.

A language’s share of existing websites is insufficient to justify another translation. Investment needs a different commercial question: which buyers arrive, what prevents them completing a transaction and whether the company can serve them in that market. The tariff change makes it easier to revise content addressing those questions, but does not supply the answers. Visits, orders and service capacity need to come from the business itself.

The implication for WPML marketing is to show continued use through an observable example: a page changed, its languages updated and the words billed again. A count of available languages alone does not establish whether a buyer received a correct explanation or whether the business could deliver the service it promised.

## Additional revenue depends on what remains useful

The current tariff provides 500 free monthly words on pay-as-you-go and uses progressive bands. The first 2,000 paid words cost 3 euros per thousand; the marginal rate falls as volume grows. Those bands must not be confused with a uniform price applied to all consumption. Word balances included in the plans also affect the first invoice.

The model involves a concrete commercial exchange. Charging for fewer revisions to the same page can make the service more useful to an active website. Growth then requires that usefulness to support the relationship and lead to new pages or languages that the customer can justify. Public documents do not quantify how much one offsets the other or establish the margin on each account.

Automatic translation does not replace the plugin licence. The WPML terms keep annual renewal, support and updates as a separate payment relationship. A renewal decision considers compatibility and service as well as words processed. Combining the two concepts obscures what is being bought and what needs to demonstrate value during the year.

The strongest commercial evidence for WPML 5.0 will appear after the first page is revised. If a team keeps useful versions in its markets and can explain which part of a change is billed, the rule becomes a concrete reason to keep using the product. A promise to translate more words alone does not settle that decision.

Selection of eight of the table’s twenty languages. Worldwide observation from October 2025, published October 22, 2025. Website content-language distribution according to W3Techs, reproduced in Digital 2026 Global Overview p. 157 and Statista. Eight values are selected from the authenticated table.
